Man Who Rented Exploding Tesla Cybertruck Outside Trump Hotel in Las Vegas Identified as Active-Duty Green Beret

A shocking explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday has left many stunned and has prompted a thorough investigation by U.S. authorities. According to multiple U.S. officials, the man connected to the rental of the Tesla Cybertruck that exploded was an active-duty Green Beret, assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group.

On New Year’s Day, the rented Cybertruck was driven by the suspect, a U.S. Army Special Forces sergeant with the rank of master sergeant, who was on leave from his assignment in Germany. The explosion, which took place shortly after the truck arrived outside the Trump Hotel, killed the driver and injured seven others in the vicinity. Law enforcement has confirmed that the explosion was triggered by a combination of fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel placed in the bed of the truck. These items were detonated by a device controlled by the driver himself.

The explosion could have been much worse if not for the Cybertruck’s sturdy body construction, which helped contain the blast. Police reported that the vehicle’s structure redirected the majority of the blast upward, minimizing damage to the hotel and preventing glass doors from shattering.

FBI Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into whether the explosion has any links to terrorism, particularly due to the symbolism of the venue and the vehicle involved. Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department noted the possible concerns: “It’s a Tesla truck, and we know that Elon Musk is working with President-elect Trump, and it’s the Trump tower.”

Federal investigators, including the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Colorado Springs Police Department, are also conducting activity at a residence in Colorado Springs, where the vehicle was rented. The truck had been rented from the Turo platform in Colorado, and authorities are working to understand the full scope of the incident and any possible connections to similar attacks.

The Connection to New Orleans

The explosion in Las Vegas follows closely after a deadly vehicle attack in New Orleans on the same day. In New Orleans, a driver crashed a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people. Authorities are investigating whether there is a connection between the two attacks, particularly given the involvement of rented vehicles from Turo and suspects with military backgrounds. While similarities exist, FBI officials have stressed that there is no definitive link between the two incidents at this time.

Tesla’s Role in the Investigation

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been an important figure in the investigation, providing additional information to law enforcement. McMahill specifically thanked Musk for offering valuable data from Tesla’s vehicle telemetry system, which tracks real-time information about the vehicle’s performance. Musk confirmed in a post on social media that the explosion was caused by large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the truck’s bed and that the vehicle itself was not the source of the blast.

The investigation into the Las Vegas explosion is ongoing, with authorities continuing to assess whether there are any broader threats tied to the attack. While the situation remains fluid, officials have expressed concerns about the symbolism involved in the choice of the location and vehicle.
